Well, it's been a while since anyone has been to the vet - probably about June or July when we had some annual exams and shots - so I decided to make this week vet week.
Okay, not really, but it sure is ending up that way. Monday afternoon Sam had a vet appointment - he was overdue for his shots and the week before he had "inappropriately eliminated" on the porch (and possibly my desk - the "possibly" because it might not have been him, not that there was "possibly" pee on my desk, cause there totally was) so I thought he might have a bladder infection or something else going on. Well, he got all checked out (and weighed in at 18.8lbs! Yay!) and we'll get the lab work back today. Which would normally be a phone call, but now we can get the results in person because...
We're taking Happy to the vet this afternoon. Last night we noticed that she was grousing in a pained way (versus her normal grousing that means she loves us and wants attention) and, upon further inspection, realized that her back end (to the left of her little tail nubbin) was swollen and apparently quite painful. I have no idea what she did to it but it has to be fairly recent because she's not wanting to walk much at all and, at least up to Monday, was acting normally. (Monday night she didn't come to bed when called and that could just be because of normal kitty contrariness, but maybe she was hurting then.) So hopefully it won't be anything serious and will be easily treated.
(In other slightly vet related news, I think lugging Sam to and from the vet alone messed up my shoulder. Again. Sigh. It was really getting better! Now it feels as bad as before I went to the chiropractor. Boo.)
Watch this space for Super Sam and Happy-Doodle updates.
ETA @ 11:45a: Rushing to vet as Happy's swelling is now an open wound. Thinking it is a ruptured anal sac. Info in that type of issue here.
ETA @ 5:30p: Happy is back from the vet and all set up in our spare bathroom. She's drugged to the gills with pain medication and an antibiotic so she's stoned but still grumpy. Her back end looks horrible - she's got an eraser-sized hole in the back of her left leg, slightly below and to the left of her tail. Apparently (per the vet) Happy most likely gnawed a hole into the spot because of the pressure caused by the swelling which turned out to be good because if it had ruptured on its own, the vet said it looks like it would have been about a nickel-sized hole.
Happy's in segregation for the next four days - she'll be drugged up for the next two (and probably still oozing) but she'll start to heal up and scab over by day four so we can probably let her out then. It will take about two weeks for it to fully heal but, aside from looking super-nasty, apparently anal sac ruptures aren't a huge problem since they are a localized abscess. Yay?
In other news, Sam's bloodwork came back great. Even though he's fat, he's still healthy. Definite yay!
Oh, Happy-Doodle is in a cone of shame. Please expect pictures. (Of the cone. Not the hole. Cause eew.)
